November 2024: RDM, Ethics & Data Protection

11/11/2024: November 2024: RDM, Ethics & Data Protection

Monday 11th November, 2024, 12:00 noon – 1:00 PM

As outlined in our Workplan for 2024 we would like to kick off a discussion with our members about ways in which we could work collaboratively to develop some guidance around the overlap in RDM, Ethics & Data Protection to reduce the administrative burden on researchers.

Mary Donaldson, Research Data Management Officer (Service Coordinator) at The University of Glasgow, will share her experience of developing a workflow encompassing RDM, Ethics and Data Protection within the University of Glasgow. At the University of Glasgow, a Project Initiation Workflow was developed in 2019 in order to support researchers setting up projects involving human participants or data about human participants. Five years later, the workflow is being overhauled to reflect changes in data governance within the University and also changes to our data protection support and processes. Mary Donaldson will present on the development of the workflow, implementation wins and challenges and the updates now being made.

Lindsay Dowling, Open Research Support Unit Lead, TU Dublin, will share some insights on the challenges faced for researchers and research managers in negotiating a path through good research data management, ethics and data protection, and outline some of the initial steps being taken organisationally to try and align resources, principles and messaging.
